You can’t really see them very well, but it doesn’t matter because I’ll tell you about them.
They’ve been happily married 20 years.
They have five beautiful children.
They are full of fun and life.
They are facing the reality of Mark having terminal cancer.
He wasn’t supposed to make it to New Year’s last year, but he did.
He wasn’t supposed to make it to New Year’s this year, but he did.
Last night I watched Mark and LaDena kiss tenderly under the lantern light as they made a wish for the New Year before they let their lantern and wish fly into the night sky with the rest of our wishes and lanterns.
I know they didn’t make a wish they couldn’t have. They’re not like that. They’ve made their peace with their situation and are just living every day they have together to the fullest.
Watching them share this special moment was the perfect way to end one year and begin another.
It reminded me how precious life is, and how short it can be.
It made me change my New Year’s wish before I let my lantern go.
It made me want to live every day to the fullest.
Thank you Mark and LaDena for sharing your precious moment with me.
I hope your New Year’s wish comes true.
